Synopsis: Presented by Jamie Foxx, “Thunder Soul” follows the extraordinary alumni from Houston’s storied Kashmere High School Stage Band, who return home after 35 years to play a tribute concert for the 92-year-old “Prof,” their beloved band leader who broke the color barrier and transformed the school’s struggling jazz band into a world-class funk powerhouse in the early 1970s.

Foxx, a Texas-native himself and an outspoken advocate of music education in schools, heard about the film after its South by Southwest premiere, and sought it out immediately. “I can’t wait to share Thunder Soul with the world so that everyone can enjoy this one of a kind experience,” said Foxx. “It’s such an entertaining and inspirational story that touches your soul and awakens the human spirit in the way that only love and the power of music can.”

The Black Power Mix Tape 1967-1975 is produced by Swedish filmmaker Göran Hugo Olsson’s and co-produced by longtime activist and actor Danny Glover.

An irresistible audiovisual collage, the film combines a treasure trove of recently rediscovered footage of the 1967–75 Black Power Movement with penetrating commentary by leading contemporary African-American voices, all set to an evocative soundtrack by Questlove of the Roots and Om’Mas.

It will open in New York on Friday, September 9 at the IFC Center and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, with a national rollout beginning in late September.

In conjunction with the film’s release, an exhibition of the same name, featuring color and black-and-white photographic film stills, and never-before-seen original documentary footage not included in the film, will be held at Third Streaming, 10 Greene Street, beginning on September 9.

Synopsis: At the end of the 1960s, numerous Swedish journalists came to the US, drawn by stories of urban unrest and revolution. Filming for close to a decade, they gained the trust of many of the leaders of the Black Power movement—Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis and Eldridge Cleaver among them—capturing them in intimate moments and remarkably unguarded interviews. Thirty years later, this lush collection of 16mm film, peppered with footage of Black Panther activities and B-roll images of black America, was found languishing in the basement of Swedish Television. Director Olsson brings this mesmerizing footage to light and, integrating audio interviews with prominent African-American artists and activists who were influenced by the struggle—from Erykah Badu to Harry Belafonte—crafts a dynamic chronicle of the birth and life of a movement.
